In some ways, writing this feels like an exercise in madness. There's no way that one person has had their fic break containment this many times and in so many different ways. But that is apparently my legacy, so here we are. I felt like it was important to me to document all of these things, because in some ways, I can't believe they happened, and that so many happened. Like, how is this my life at this point?
For the purposes of this series of events, I'm using 'break containment' to mean when my fic or fic-adjacent stuff is discovered by the people I'm writing about and publicly acknowledged/read out/posted/discussed/etc.
Also it's crazy to think about how so much of it happened during my Chaser fandom era. I had forgotten just how wild those times were in terms of my fic specifically getting out there. Taskmaster just outed me once. With my Chaser fic, it happened multiple times. I'm also counting times that my chaserslash lj community was mentioned, since that was something I founded and ran as admin and mod, so. Not fic itself, but my baby nonetheless.
It's going to feel strange to lay it all out like this, and document every single thing that happened. I wish I had some of these things better documented, to be fair. But some were things told to me by others, and there wasn't much to really document since they were real-life things at tapings, or they were things that happened on the radio and no one thought to take recordings at the time.
Also I can't guarantee it's going to be in any way chronological. It sort of will be. But some of the dates of things are very uncertain in my head, so please forgive me for that. I was not very good at blogging about this stuff back then in a way that's discoverable in the year of our lord 2025.
Because this is long enough as it is, I'm splitting this up into four sections from stuff I have evidence for to 'this is just a weird coincidence, OR IS IT????' stuff:
2) A Friend Told Me - Source: Trust Me, Bro
Click each link above to jump to that section. Clicking 'top of page' will bring you back here.
This will be the longest section, which is wild in and of itself at that point, you know? Most of it happened in the Chaser fandom between idk 2006/7 and 2011 or so. It was a busy time, but I mostly blame Marieke Hardy for that, as you will soon discover. I won't include all of her crimes in here, since some of them I don't have receipts for at this moment in time, but once I find the second blog post I'm looking for, I'll add that in here. There's also the radio stuff, which I was mostly told about, but didn't always hear myself, for which I only have one old livejournal post to prove it happened at least once, but not the others, so. That's also going in the next section. But everything else in here I have proof of. Which, again, is wild lmao.
We have to begin, as we must, with Marieke Hardy. Between mid-2004 to mid-2008, she ran a blog at reasonsyouwillhateme.com, and one of the things she ran consistently was a friday qna post. Sadly, she has made it difficult to accurately date her posts now, so I can't say for sure when this post was actually made, but at some point in 2007, Friday QnA #67 appeared, and halfway down the page, was this question from Tara.
I have no idea who Tara is, nor how they found my fic journal, but that is my old fic journal before I ported it to dreamwidth, and those are two of my fics lol. I do remember that Craig/Abbott fic series very well (tw for noncon tho as a warning), though I'm uncertain which specific Adam/Wil fic she's talking about here, as that description does fit a few of them negl.
Marieke did go on to mention Chaser slash in a future blog post. I remember one more where she was talking about one of my Chris/Craig fics specifically, where she quoted it and commented on it, but I have yet to find that one. I'm glad the archive is available, but it's a pain clicking through to each post to see if it's the one I want. Girl, stop being so prolific oml. DX When I find it, I'll edit it in here for you all to see.
She did also talk about it on the radio, when she was doing triple j breakfast. I have one link that proves one instance, but it was definitely more than one time it happened, and I can't be certain this one was when she was interviewing Chris and mentioned it then, or if that was a different time.
I often missed catching these live because a) I live in Western Australia, so my radio is always delayed to my local time, and b) I get up late so I always miss breakfast radio anyway. But I know about more of these things by others who did hear them, bc I was told that Marieke had found the Chaserslash livejournal community and wanted to get in to read the fics. Which is why I added a line to the community description that said basically, if you are Marieke Hardy, you won't be getting in. I removed it from the archived community on Dreamwidth, as it was basically an archive at that point rather than an active community.
The next thing that happened was in 2009 when Chas decided to tweet out one of my Chas/Andrew werewolf fics. Because of course he did. Also Chas is chronically online enough to have tweeted this during a point where the fandom was actually active. Good work, Chas.
Which, fine, you do you, Chas. I wasn't on AO3 at this point, so my fic was still being posted to my fic journal. Marieke had been banging on about it long enough for him to be aware of it, and if he didn't find the link through Marieke's blog, he probably googled for it. I wasn't trying to hide my fic, after all. The Chaser slash community was locked to protect everyone else from prying eyes. I didn't care at that point.
Also. Please note the date. The fic in question was a werewolf AU named Once Bitten, Twice Shy. I posted that fic one day earlier than his tweet. ONE DAY. It would have appeared at the top of the journal under the pinned post, very easy to find when he went looking. Why did he go looking at this point in time? Only Chas knows that. But hey, thanks for the promotion Chas. :D
At the time, a friend of mine DM'd him about it, though I forget exactly what it was about apart from the fic. A lot of these memories are sketchy as fuck but I'm doing my best. But they did get a response and shared it with me.
In my typical spite fic fashion, I wrote another werewolf fic, a sequel to the first, that made Chas the big werewolf. I think at the time I was too shy to mention that in the author's notes though, but reading back through it, that's absolutely why I wrote it lmao. Chas is definitely the bigger werewolf at that point lol.
And that, I think, brings us to the end of the provable Chaser madness. All of that happening in the space of, what, 3-4 years? Insane tbh. I'm not sure what we were all on at that time, but Australia is a small country, and ig the community of comedy fans and Chaser fans is also small, and so ofc we stood out.
Everything went quiet after that. I was still writing fic, but I'd moved onto bandslash at that point, and even though they were somewhat small and quiet fandom spaces, I was still enjoying myself. And mostly glad no one bothered me about my fic, bc I had been through enough of that lmao.
No, the next time it happens is when I've gotten into UK Taskmaster, and boy did that show kick my writing gears into action. I wrote so much fic. Like, so so very much fic. I wrote more fic for Taskmaster than for my other fandoms combined. Insane behaviour tbh.
So, it's late 2019. I'm at this stupid part-time office job. I'm about to leave for home and checking my emails. I see I have received a comment on one of my Taskmaster fics. Great! Love that for me. :D
Only the comment said the following:
Which podcast, you might be asking? The Horne Section Podcast! The new season was dropping that day, and Greg was the first guest. Which, fine, that was going to be fun anyway. But then I had to grapple with the fact that my poem had been included in the podcast. Worse, still, is that the poem I THOUGHT this was, was in fact NOT the poem they were performing.
This
is the poem they performed on the podcast.
See, I had retconned this particular poem because, as Greg rightly points out, the rhythm is shit. Yes, Greg, I know. That's why I forgot I wrote it. XD It was called Feast, and it was one of my Advent calendar fics which I wrote in a hurry and didn't really like once it was done, but posted anyway just to get it done and check off another box on the card. So I had forgotten it because it wasn't very good. But that's the fic they picked to perform. Also I must mention that they performed nearly the entire poem, save for I think one stanza that contains the blowjob itself lol. But they sung everything else lol.
But, on the other hand, I do know why they picked it. It has parts for both Greg and Alex to read/sing, unlike all my other poems. Which does suggest Alex had to have read through enough of them to work that out! So he's definitely read a bunch of my Taskmaster fic. Which, fair play, they give me great material, it only seems fair that they can set my smut to music and make a shit poem acceptable.
The episode of the Horne Section Podcast my fic was featured on can be found here, for anyone interested in listening to it. It's about ten minutes in. The whole episode is very good, ofc.
This was the first time Alex and Greg broke containment with fanfic btw. They went haywire after that point. So in some small way, Alex and Greg reading out fic titles and excerpts on chat shows is all my fault. /j
Though a lot of that happened after I locked down my fic for Channel 4 Erotic Fanfic Puppet Show reasons, and so it may have just not been as visible to him anyway. Plus I'd kind of shifted to Hermitcraft fic by then, so my Taskmaster fic wasn't really getting posted much at all.
The least threatening time my fic was noticed was when one of my Hermitcraft fics was reblogged by False Symmetry. It was just a short little fic about her and her big river business, and the rivers that live in her briefcase. Clearly she liked it enough to add to her queue at the time. It's worth noting since fic doesn't usually get a lot of attention from the Hermits, so to have mine Perceived was very nice. I just hope she hasn't seen my shippy stuff lol. :D
These are things that were told to me by friends or people I trust, but aren't otherwise verifiable with any kind of proof. These aren't people who would lie to me about this stuff, especially as at the time, and how RPF spaces operated, was that we would never be the kind of people who would go up to those we were writing about and shove our fics in their faces. So if they've found it and decided to do stuff with it, well, that's on them.
I wasn't just writing Chaser fic at this point in time. I was also writing other AusCom fic. And this had not gone unnoticed by Wil Anderson. Love that guy. Fave comedian. So on April 2012, a friend had been in Melbourne for the comedy festival (MICF) and had been to Wil's Fanfiction Comedy show. Where Wil and Charlie Clausen would read out fics. My friend recognised one of the fics they'd read out as one of mine, and let me know about it.
The fic in question was a Wil Anderson/Adam Hills fic called, appropriately, Festival Sex, though it's actually set at the Edinburgh Fringe rather than at MICF lol. I'd been posting to AO3 for a few years at that point, and putting up some of my back catalogue as well. I had to edit this fic to add in Wil partially reading it out just in case people went looking for it. And then went and posted the rest of my Wil fics because I knew there were more than 6 Wil fics at that point in time, because I'd written 18 of them myself and wanted to prove that to him out of spite. XD
I often thought about how I might never have known about this if my friend hadn't been there and recognised my own writing. It could have remained unknown to me otherwise.
It's interesting that Tara brought up one of my Craig/Tony Abbott pieces, bc I have another anecdote from one of the War on Everything tapings, where some guy I didn't know took one of my Craig/Abbott fics to show it to Craig in a bid to get me condemned? or something? I forget the full context but I was told this by someone who'd been at the taping and saw it happen. I'm pretty sure it was something that was mentioned on the old Chaser forum? Or I was told by someone from the Chaser forum, but the forum is not as well archived as Marieke's blog, so I can't dig up any evidence for this one, sadly, just that I remember being told about it.
At the time, I was the only one publicly posting Chaser slash fic, so if it was going to be anyone being picked on, it'd be me, since everyone else was locking their fics down. I didn't bother. Hence, I attracted all of the attention.
This is really only here because I just simply assume Mythical J. Sausage (the J is silent) has read every treebark fic that exists on the internet, because no one is a bigger treebark shipper than Sausage. Treebark being Rendog and Martyn Inthelittlewood's ship name, ofc. I've written a few treebark fics in my time (1, 2, 3, 4), and I'm pretty happy with them tbh. But I still assume Sausage has read them. That man goes into fandom places he really shouldn't go, but that's his choice and I'm not going to stop him, so.
Okay, so in the Chaser's 20 Years of Mediocrity book, the Chaser included interviews with everyone, and while most of the questions were reasonable and understandable, the one outstanding 'joke' question was based on the assumption that Andrew had been having an affair with everyone else. And mostly everyone committed to the bit. I'll never know if Chas did as his answer to this question wasn't included, and Dom decided to answer it straight. But everyone else played into it. It's also interesting that Chas doesn't have a response to this, given what Andrew said:
DON'T SILENCE MY MAN CHAS /J
Anyway. The reason why I bring this up is because at one point in 2007, I wrote a fic called, Is Now A Good Time To Mention Prostitute!Andrew?, based on the same premise, that of Andrew sleeping with everyone else in the group. It was a short fic, with short little vignettes from his POV of him sleeping with them all and asking his reasons why.
Their answers don't line up with that fic at all, which is why to me this is just a strange coincidence to me. Andrew was always very popular with the fans, so it isn't weird to think of him sleeping with everyone else, especially if you already know the fic exists, and there might be an appetite for it, even in 2019. I'm willing to believe they just came up with it as a silly idea, irregardless of my fic or not.
Now, if it was just this? I'd be like, sure, they just came up with this absurd idea that Andrew's the bicycle and not Craig. However. I need you to see Charles' response.
This is where I get Suspicious. Because this is exactly how I wrote Charles/Andrew in Pictures of You/Lovesong. He and Andrew had been together for a few years, there'd been a bad breakup, and Andrew had refused to talk to him after that. Charles was always asking the others to get Andrew to talk to him as he felt like he'd been exiled to New York and away from his friends. Reconciling them was half the point of the epilogue I wrote for it, Charades and Shadows.
Again, I can't prove anything. Charles might just be being a dick because that's the kinda little bitch he is. But boy did this make me side-eye something chronic. >_> Why was that your response, Charles. Why. Why did you say those words specifically, Charles. Also Charles giving me bad post-break up Charles/Andrew angst in the year of our lord 2019 is certainly a Choice frfr. Why would you do that to me, Charles. Why.
